A McDonald's representative said customers at more than 20 Manitoba locations were overcharged due to a computer prematurely implementing a tax increase.

The representative said an error in the restaurants' computer systems led to customers being charged 8 percent tax on their meals even though the tax increase is not scheduled to take effect until July 1, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Friday.

The eatery said the error only affected customers Thursday and any overcharged patrons can bring their receipts back to the restaurants for refunds.
