Zendaya chose an unconventional hairstyle for the 2016 Grammy Awards on Monday.

The 19-year-old actress and singer walked the red carpet in a black Dsquared2 tuxedo while sporting a blonde version of the popular 1980s mullet haircut.

"This hair was actually kind of an out-of-the-blue type hair," Zendaya told "Entertainment Tonight." "I wanted to do the short blonde, but I wanted to do something different, so I was like, 'Let's do a mullet!'"

"I'm like, 'Why not?'" she explained. "I wanted to bring that feel into it. It's kind of like a throwback a little bit." The star also said she did her own makeup because she's "so picky" and "overly obsessive about every little thing."

Zendaya wasn't nominated for any awards at the ceremony, but did tell Billboard she's working on her second studio album. The singer released her debut, self-titled album in 2013, which peaked at No. 51 on the Billboard 200.

"It's been a while, but I'm very glad that I'm back and I feel very confident in the work I'm creating and making for myself," she said of her new single, "Something New." "I'm focusing on the song right now, but there's definitely an album in the pot. There's an album coming up very soon."

Zendaya is known for her ever-changing style and often switches up her hairstyle with wigs. The singer recently told People she used to be insecure about her curly hair, revealing it took years to embrace herself and her natural hair.

"When I was younger, I was afraid to experiment with my look because I was worried about what people thought. But as I've gotten older and become more confident in myself, I just don't care," she told the magazine.
