Jennifer Hudson drops by 'American Idol' to visit sixth season's Top 20

By Christopher Rocchio, 03/06/2007

Jennifer Hudson found herself in familiar surroundings last Thursday night when she paid a surprise visit to the Top 20 semifinalists competing on the sixth season of American Idol.

"It was on elimination day.  So I thought that was the perfect time to do so because I was always in the bottom three," Hudson told Access Hollywood correspondent Shaun Robinson at Friday night's NAACP Image Awards.  The Oscar winning Dreamgirls star and Idol 3 finalist received a best supporting actress award at the NAACP Image Awards ceremony.

Upon her unexpected visit to the Idol set, Hudson said the hopefuls were lounging around the green room when she walked in to say hello.

"I just walked in like, 'Oh my god, I'm so nervous I'll be eliminated' and they looked up and they went crazy," she told Robinson.  "So, it was a lot of fun. The last thing I said was its alright if you are eliminated. Take it from me it's okay. So, they can be reminded its not the end of the world."

One person Hudson didn't run into was Idol judge Simon Cowell.

"Simon was hiding from me," she told Robinson.  "I think he was in his trailer or something."

While Hudson claims she simply went to meet the contestants with no intention of it being filmed, captured on camera it was, and footage from it will most likely surface during an upcoming Idol broadcast.
