Married at First Sight stars Erik Lake and Virginia Coombs aren't getting to the root of their problems, according to their co-stars Clara Berghaus and Jacob Harder.

During the April 21 episode of Married at First Sight: Unfiltered, Clara and Jacob watched back a Season 12 clip of Erik explaining his "standards" in a marriage to Virginia.

"I expect in a marriage that you're not spending the night at some guy's house and you're with me every night," says Erik, who was married and divorced once before signing up for this experiment.

"What if you're out of town and I'm drinking late at night over [my friend] Cole's [place] and it's storming really bad?" Virginia asks her pilot husband.

"Well you're throwing these crazy scenarios in there," Erik points out.

"Okay, but you're acting like I absolutely can't because 'that's what you do in a marriage.' Do you want me to come home by myself to an empty house while you're out traveling?" Virginia asks.

"What does it matter if I come home if you're out traveling? It's still not fair for you to say, 'This is what I believe the standard is and this is what we're doing.'"

Erik simply concludes, "It's what I believe."

Unfiltered host Jamie Otis -- who starred on Season 1 of Married at First Sight -- asked Clara for her take on that argument.

"It sounds like there's stubbornness on both sides and maybe not a willingness to compromise," Clara shared. "I think that they both need to bend a little."

Jacob was then asked whether he'd be okay with his wife Haley Harris sleeping over a guy friend's house when he's out of town.

"I mean, it would definitely have to be a conversation," Jacob admitted. "I would have to know that guy and I would also have to trust that guy, right?"

"But she also has to understand that this is a very normal thing for a husband to feel," Jacob noted.

"I understand Erik's side, but I think sometimes they're having a more serious conversation on this issue maybe because there's other things lingering."

"Yeah," Clara agreed, "they're not getting to the root of the true problem, so they're fighting over this one issue repeatedly, sort of in circles."

Married at First Sight expert Pastor Calvin Roberson also made an appearance on Unfiltered and discussed how Virginia and Erik might be able to reach a compromise in this department.

"Someone is going to have to give in, and in this kind of situation, you have to look at what's valuable to their marriage," Pastor Cal said.

"How important is this issue to their marriage?"

Clara suggested the couple needs to ask themselves, "Are you going to die on this hill?"

Pastor Cal agreed and added, "Staying over? There are so many things I don't do. Even though I may want to do them, I just don't do them because marriage is more important than that."

From the beginning of their marriage, Virginia found Erik's strong opinions or beliefs on certain subjects a little off-putting.

Virginia has complained about Erik being too controlling at times, and Dr. Viviana Coles said during a March episode of Unfiltered that Erik explains things in a commanding way that comes across demanding.

Not only has Virginia expressed annoyance over Erik's standards and expectations for a marriage, but Virginia also felt her husband had given her an ultimatum about having children.

Erik once told Virginia that he'd be "done" with their relationship if she didn't want to have a child with him, but he later backtracked when confronted and altered his stance on that a bit.

In the latest Married at First Sight twelfth-season episode, Virginia gave Erik her own ultimatum -- that he must find them a new place to live in four months, when her own lease is up, because she didn't want to move into the apartment he already owned that's not pet-friendly.

Virginia also said she wanted her cats to sleep in bed with them despite Erik's allergy to cats and saying he'd "suffer" with that type of living arrangement.

Virginia determined that while she and Erik love each other, they may not like each other all the time.
