Jennifer Hudson's longtime boyfriend James Payton to propose?

By Christopher Rocchio, 04/02/2007

If Jennifer Hudson thought nothing could beat winning an Oscar for her role in Dreamgirls, the former American Idol 3 finalist should probably think again.

"Winning the Oscar was the best day of her life.  She thought nothing could top that," a "source" told OK! Weekly in the magazine's April 2 issue.  "But being asked to marry the man she loves will be better."

Hudson and her boyfriend of eight years, James Payton, have known each other since they were kids and OK! reported that the two are "moving forward" with plans to be wed.

"My boyfriend watched me struggle to get here," said Hudson of Payton in the March 26 issue of OK!.  "There were some dark times when he'd say, 'Keep it up, girl, keep it up.'"

While a representative for Hudson would not confirm the possible engagement, OK! reported Payton is "preparing to propose" and was just waiting to "catch the right romantic moments with her."  He must have found it, because Hudson has reportedly been "consulting" with jewelry designers to create the "perfect engagement ring."

"She wants it to be something special and very personal," the "source" told OK!.  "Jennifer's style is elegant and classy.  She's not interested in having a huge rock.  She wants it to be tasteful."
