'Queer Eye' explodes Bravo ratings record for third straight week

By Wade Paulsen, 09/05/2003

Ho-hum ... another episode of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, another Bravo ratings record. For the third straight week, Queer Eye, which airs Tuesday at 10 PM, drew more viewers than ever before, meaning that it has set a new Bravo total audience record in six of the last eight weeks.

The episode, summarized here, drew a total audience of 3.35 million viewers to Bravo, the second straight week that Queer Eye has drawn over 3 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research. Prior to Queer Eye, the highest audience ever to watch a Bravo program was 1.3 million. Better yet for NBC, Queer Eye finished second overall in its time slot among viewers in the adult 18-49 demographic. Not second among cable networks, but second OVERALL -- ahead of the offerings on CBS, ABC, Fox, WB and UPN and trailing only parent NBC's repeat of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.

In addition, Queer Eye's lead-in program, the finale of the gay dating show Boy Meets Boy, which aired Tuesday at 9 p.m., set its own new ratings record. Boy drew 1.62 million total viewers to see James pick gay Wes over secretly-straight Franklin, which makes it Bravo's most-watched show ever that isn't named Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

Hmmm ... if Queer Eye can draw those audience numbers to a formerly-obscure cable channel, imagine how its audience would grow if it were broadcast on parent NBC again. We're sure that we aren't the only ones having those thoughts....
