Charity rejected Joey Graziadei in second place and selected Dotun as her winner at the end of The Bachelorette's twentieth season, which aired Monday night on ABC.

Charity and Dotun are now happily engaged, but Dotun admitted to People he wasn't sure things were going to play out that way in Fiji.

"As happy as I was to have the potential [to get engaged], part of you knows that if you don't get what you want, you're going to be devastated and that's going to be a tough thing to deal with," Dotun said of his mindset walking into the Final Rose Ceremony.

"You realize, 'I dropped my life and I took this risk and I found someone that I love and are they going to choose me?' I couldn't speak throughout most of the day."

Dotun said he was so overwhelmed with emotion and fear that he "might've said -- outside of the proposal -- 10 words coherently" on that final day.

"It was a lot of tears," Dotun admitted.

While Dotun seemingly felt very confident in his romance with Charity and their future together, he acknowledged how he "didn't want to get my hopes up" about winning The Bachelorette star's heart.

Dotun therefore attempted to "compartmentalize" his feelings throughout The Bachelorette journey.

But, "I would say beginning of Fiji was when I was be like, 'I think I'm going home with this woman,'" Dotun shared. "But you don't want to be heartbroken, so you got to be careful with that mindset."

And Charity -- who was clearly "torn" and "conflicted" during her last few days in Fiji -- reiterated to People how her final decision between Dotun and Joey was definitely "not easy."

"Saying goodbye was really hard for me," Charity confessed to the magazine.

"The emotions just overcame me, rightfully so. Throughout this whole journey for me, saying goodbye to anyone was not an easy thing to do, but especially at that point when you have formed some connection, that was difficult for me."

The family and child therapist from Georgia elaborated, "I don't want to be the person that has to contribute to someone else's pain, but it was necessary."

Charity said after taking "some time to collect myself" following Joey's departure, she was excited to see Dotun again and hear his final speech.

"It's a crazy place to be in, feeling two extremes," Charity pointed out. "Once I saw Dotun, I was just at peace and I was so excited. I was ready to say yes to forever with him."

Dotun left his job at an inopportune time to compete on The Bachelorette, and he had to leave behind a daily life he had become comfortable with in Fresno, CA.

But the integrative medicine specialist concluded, "If you love someone, then you should be willing to do it all."

And Dotun and The Bachelorette star, who made each other feel valued and admired, fell deeply in love throughout the process.

"With Dotun, it boils down to a feeling you can't really place and you can't really pinpoint; you just have it and it's there, and when it comes together, you feel alive," Charity gushed on the finale of her season.

"I love Dotun, and I see, so clearly, a future with him -- a future that is going to bring me the most happiness."

Charity and Dotun said on The Bachelorette's live Season 20 finale that they are in no rush to wed; however, they could imagine planning a wedding fairly soon -- and maybe even getting married in Nigeria, according to Good Morning America.

The couple said they're just looking forward to being engaged, going on dates in public, and growing in love.

To help them on that journey, ABC gifted Charity and Dotun a romantic trip to Greece. And Charity will also be competing on Dancing with the Stars' 32nd season this fall.

Joey, meanwhile, was officially announced as The Bachelor star for the show's 28th season, which is expected to premiere in January 2024.

And before The Bachelor returns, ABC is premiering Bachelor in Paradise's ninth season as well as The Golden Bachelor starring Gerry Turner on Thursday, September 28 beginning at 8PM ET/PT.
