"Deadwood" creator David Milch has said his Emmy-winning Western would only run four seasons, but HBO is sending out signals season three may be its last.

Milch had said from the onset of the drama that each season of "Deadwood" would represent a year in the real life of a mining camp that burned down after four years in 1879, Zap2it.com reported.
But the Web site said there are reports out of Hollywood that HBO missed its deadline to extend the contracts of "Deadwood's" extensive ensemble cast, meaning the actors are now free to seek other work.
Even if the cable network decides to give "Deadwood" a fourth season, Milch could find himself missing key characters, Zap2it.com noted.
The third season premieres June 11 and opens with the camp preparing for its first elections.
Even if "Deadwood" floats down the river earlier than expected, Milch will maintain an HBO presence with a new "surf noir" drama called "John from Cincinnati."
