Lindsay Lohan is to plead no contest to misdemeanor theft in a Los Angeles court and could avoid jail time, TMZ reported Tuesday.

The "Mean Girls" and "Freaky Friday" star is awaiting trial in a shoplifting case. She has already been sentenced to 120 days in jail for violating her probation for a driving under the influence conviction by allegedly stealing a $2,500 necklace from a boutique. Her lawyer is appealing the jail sentence.
TMZ said even if the appeal doesn't overturn the sentence, the judge overseeing Lohan's case is not likely to increase her 120-day sentence if she enters the no-contest plea.
The celebrity news Web site quoted the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department as saying people convicted of non-violent, misdemeanor offenses are routinely allowed to serve their sentence at home, as long as they wear an electronic monitoring device.
Given these circumstances, Lohan may not have to serve any jail time, even if the appeal doesn't work, TMZ said.
