Injured Canada goose captured in real-life wild goose chase

UPI News Service, 04/14/2013

Animal control officers and firefighters in Fort Worth, Texas, said they caught up with an injured Canada goose after a real-life wild goose chase.

Several people called Fort Worth Animal Care and Control Saturday to report seeing a Canada goose with a damaged wing near the Lakes of River Trails, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

When animal control officers arrived, they made several unsuccessful attempts to capture the bird, which retreated to the water whenever approached by the officers.

They called the Fort Worth Fire Department, which sent firefighters trained in swift-water rescue to the scene, said Lt. Carol Jones, a Fire Department spokeswoman.

"After a brief but very interesting chase, wildlife officers working together with firefighters were able to capture the bird without causing any additional injuries," Jones said.

The bird was brought to the Animal Hospital of Southwest Fort Worth where it was treated by veterinarian Stan Lee.

"Something severed the left wing," Lee said. "It looked like to me it was an animal attack."

Lee said the bird will likely be unable to fly again but will be well-cared for at a wildlife rehabilitation.

"She will be protected and fed," he said. "She will have a wonderful life there. She'll probably become somebody's pet."
