The Smoking Gun Web site revealed Friday Scott Savol had been arrested four years ago and charged with felony domestic violence in an incident with a girlfriend who is the mother of his child.

The charge was reduced to misdemeanor disorderly conduct and Savol was given a $500 fine, a year's probation, an order to complete a domestic violence program and a suspended 20-day jail term.

"American Idol" producers said since Savol was "forthcoming ... regarding his misdemeanor, we felt the situation did not warrant his disqualification," TVGuideOnline reported.

Savol and the other contestants resume their competition Tuesday with an expected TV audience of 30 million viewers.
