Meanwhile, NBC's "30 Rock" was named best TV comedy series by the critic group and "Rock" star Tina Fey was honored for individual achievement in comedy.

"John Adams" star Paul Giamatti was recognized for individual achievement in drama while the HBO historical drama won for best movie, miniseries or special.

Variety said "Saturday Night Live" Executive Producer Lorne Michaels was given a Career Achievement Award.

Other top awards included a best in children's programming nod for PBS's "WordGirl" and an award for achievement in news and information for "The War: A Film by Ken Burns & Lynn Novick," also from PBS.
