Sandler was originally scheduled to be the lead guest on Tuesday night's show, The New York Times reported.
The newspaper said Sandler taped the show after rehearsing with writers and producers in the afternoon.
Sandler called in actor Don Cheadle to be the lead guest on the show. Cheadle is Sandler's co-star in the film "Reign Over Me" that Sandler had been planning to promote on the Letterman show.
