500 pound safe stolen from Florida home

UPI News Service, 06/08/2013

A Florida man who thought his 500 pound, bolted-down steel safe would protect his valuables in a burglary says he was proved wrong when the safe was stolen.

Albert Owler was alerted in January by a neighbor his Broward County home had been targeted. Owler's first thought: At least we have the safe.

"Safe" turned out to be a misnomer. The burglars unbolted the massive unit and managed to carry it out of the house, The Miami Herald said.

The safe held 17 years' worth of birthday and anniversary jewelry gifts for Owler's wife, important papers and a collection of 12 skeet shooting and other guns, many given to Owler by his late father. Other items from the home not in the safe were also taken, police said.

The guns were valued at $20,000. No estimate was given for the missing jewelry.

The Broward County Sheriff's Department said there was a break in the case this week when two suspects were caught on store surveillance cameras using Owler's credit card to buy dog food at a Dollar Store in Taramac, Fla.

Investigators have circulated the images to the media.
