The Hollywood Reporter said the network is expected to make a decision by the end of the month regarding whether to greenlight a pilot. Rob Thomas, creator of the acclaimed teen detective series "Veronica Mars," is in talks to write the project, the entertainment industry trade paper said.

While it is unclear whether any of the characters from the original show might be incorporated into the new series, sources told The Hollywood Reporter "90210" creator Darren Star is not involved.

"Melrose Place," which ran for seven seasons, also was a spinoff of "Beverly Hills, 90210."

"90210," which ran from 1990 through 2000, starred Luke Perry, Jason Priestley, Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Tori Spelling and Brian Austin Green.
