Over 30,000 flock to Motor City Comic Con three-day event
UPI News Service, 05/19/2013
Organizers of Motor City Comic Con said the crowd count at the three-day event that ended Sunday in suburban Detroit likely topped 30,000.
More than 18,000 enthusiasts crowded into the Suburban Collection Showcase in the suburb of Novi Saturday to meet and mingle with fellow science fiction fans and some of the big names of the business.
Michael Goldman, founder of the event, told The Detroit News the growing popularity of science fiction and super heroes in the movies and television were driving interest among the U.S. public in comic books.
"You've got all these new people coming into the comic book shops that you never had before," he said.
The News said Motor City Comic Con featured a bevy of actors and comic book icons including Marvel Comics founder Stan Lee.
A new fad among some fans was having their arms autographed by the stars for use as an outline for a permanent tattoo.
"As soon as I get to my car, I'm going to call my tattoo artist and he'll get me right in," fan Dennis Elliott told the News after Lee signed his forearm.
