But the take from the steamy remake of the old TV show was less than $5 million ahead of No. 2 "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," which took in nearly $20.5 million and was finally dethroned from the top spot in its fourth weekend.
"Pirates" has gathered in a whopping $358.27 million since its release.
All figures are from Box Office Mojo.
Coming in third this weekend was "John Tucker Must Die," with a little more than $14 million; fourth was "Monster House" with $11.5 million; fifth, "The Ant Bully" with more than $8.14 million.
Both "Monster" and "Ant" were in their first weekend of release.
Sixth, "You, Me and Dupree," a little more than $7 million; seventh, "Lady in the Water," dropping a hard 61 percent in its second weekend, about $7 million; eighth, "Little Man," $5.1 million; ninth, "The Devil Wears Prada," $4.77 million.
"Cars" rounded out the top 10, still chugging along in its eighth week with nearly $2.47 million.
