Italian-language outlet Rai News 24 reported the bottle was discovered in an 18th-century chest owned by the Jacoli family a couple of years ago and was accompanied by a note from 1943, The Local.it said.

"Vinegar taken from a flask from the Gregori family of Modena in 1740. Today, February 17th 1943, the vinegar is 203 years old. Signed, Giulio Jacoli fu Cesare," the note read.

Rai News said experts at the Museum of Balsamic Vinegar in Modena sampled the vinegar and rated it 307 points, just 10.8 points below the rating they gave the winner of this year's "best balsamic vinegar" competition.
