Google honors author Gabriel Garcia Marquez with new Doodle

UPI News Service, 03/06/2018

Google is celebrating renowned Colombian author, journalist, and Nobel laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez on what would have been his 91st birthday with a new Doodle.

Google's homepage features artwork by Matthew Cruickshank that depicts Garcia Marquez's magical city of Macondo which he described as having fish made of gold, large yellow butterflies and a city of mirrors in his book, One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Garcia Marquez, known affectionately as Gabo throughout Latin America, is considered one of the most important writers of the 20th century.

"In his long literary career, he penned over 25 books, transporting readers into a world of magical realism where they find themselves in the lush, humid tropics -- moldering into solitude or being slowly consumed by the throes of passion," Google said of his career.

"Gabo's keen sense of political activism and courage also allowed him to author a number of non-fictional works that eloquently document the times that he lived in, News of a Kidnapping being among the most famous of these," the company continued.

Garcia Marquez died in 2014 at the age of 87.
