UPI News Service, 12/18/2010

A Florida artist said she was "offended" at the removal of her two nude sculptures from a community center where they had twice before been displayed.

Mary Eiland, 56, said she was called to remove her pieces, "Hazel" and "Lady in Stone," each about 2 feet tall and depicting nude women from the neck to the thighs, from Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton after they had been in public view for only one day, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Friday.

Eiland, who said the same sculptures had been on display in the same case at the community center twice before for month-long stretches in 2008 and 2009, said she arrived to find the sculptures had been concealed behind a painting.

"When they told me to come and get these sculptures, especially after I got there and found that they'd hidden them, I was offended," she said.

Buddy Parks, deputy director of Boca Raton Recreational Services, said he was unaware of any complaints from the public but staff members at the center deemed the nude sculptures inappropriate for public display.
