The Boston-based band is now on "hiatus," it announced in a news release.
The release did not say when the surgery will take place or specify the exact nature of Tyler's vocal problem.
"Tyler's doctors advised him not to continue performing to give his voice time to recover," the statement said. "Tyler will be on total vocal rest and cannot perform for an extended period of time."
A spokesman for the band earlier told the Boston Herald it was "absolutely untrue" Tyler was suffering from throat cancer or bird flu.
