Paul McCartney and his estranged wife, Heather Mills, were unable to settle their divorce dispute in England, signaling a bitter showdown in court next year.

McCartney, 65, reportedly offered Mills, 39, a $100 million settlement in exchange for a confidentiality agreement barring Mills from discussing the couple's four year marriage.

Mills responded with a $70 million acceptance if she retained the right to speak publicly about the marriage. Rumors circulated that Mills wishes to publish a book about her marriage to the former Beatle.

The couple appeared in court Thursday and spent eight hours behind locked doors attempting to mediate the dispute.

The meeting ended unsuccessfully, with unnamed sources telling The Telegraph, "The whole thing broke down without an agreement."

The two are scheduled to go to trial in February.
