The former American Idol third-season finalist has signed on to star in the off-Broadway production of The Toxic Avenger, Playbill reported Tuesday.

DeGarmo will play the role of blind librarian Sarah in the rock musical, which opens August 14 at New World Stages in Manhattan.

"I am so excited to be coming back to New York to join the cast of The Toxic Avenger," said DeGarmo in a statement.  "When I saw the show, I laughed my head off. I can't wait to start rehearsal -- and to be blonde again!"

The 22-year-old will join Nick Cordero, Demond Green, Jonathan Root and Nancy Opel in The Toxic Avenger, which is based on the 1985 film of the same name.

DeGarmo finished second to Fantasia Barrino during Idol's third season in 2004.  Last year, she also competed on the first season CMT's Gone Country reality competition.

In 2006, DeGarmo made her Broadway debut during a four-month run of Hairspray
