Oprah Winfrey picks Jonathan Franzen's "Freedom" for book club

U.S. talk-show host Oprah Winfrey has chosen Jonathan Franzen's novel "Freedom" for her next book-club discussion, The New York Times said.

Winfrey selected the author's book "Corrections" for her book club in 2001, but canceled Franzen's scheduled appearance on her show after he said in interviews he was afraid the distinction of being a Winfrey pick might scare away male readers.

He later apologized for his remarks.
