A lawyer for Michael Jackson's estate is calling a suggestion the U.S. pop star's mother could have prevented his death "preposterous."

Jackson's father, Joe, told Britain's News of the World he wanted Katherine, his wife of 60 years, to "step in" and help get their famous son into rehab to deal with an addiction to prescription drugs, but she declined to do so out of respect for his privacy.

Michael Jackson, who was 50, died June 25, 2009, of a propofol overdose.

Howard Weitzman, an attorney for the recording star's estate, issued a statement to RadarOnline.com Monday in response to Joe Jackson's allegations against Katherine Jackson.

"The inference by Joe Jackson that Mrs. Jackson was in any way responsible for Michael's death is preposterous," Weitzman said. "Katherine Jackson was a supportive and loving mother throughout Michael's life. His love and respect for her is reflected in his estate plan."

Katherine Jackson was given custody of Jackson's three children in the plan, which also provides for the family financially. Joe Jackson was omitted from the plan, however, RadarOnline.com noted.

Dr. Conrad Murray is awaiting trial on a charge of involuntary manslaughter in connection with Michael Jackson's death. He reportedly has said he administered the anesthesia to Jackson to help him sleep, but has not admitted any wrongdoing.
