'Less Than Kind' takes three awards at 25th annual Gemini Awards

"Less Than Kind," a Winnipeg-set drama about a driving school run by a dysfunctional family, was a big winner at the 25th annual Gemini Awards in Toronto.

The HBO program won three awards Saturday, including best comedy, at the annual celebration of the best Canadian television, the CBC reported.

The award for best drama went to "The Tudors," Robert Carlyle was named best actor for his role in "Stargate Universe," and best actress went to Caroline Cave in "Cra$h and Burn."

"Less Than Kind" also won awards for best writing in a comedy, and Benjamin Arthur won for best individual performance in a comedy.

Singer Elvis Costello won the Gemini Award for best talk show for "Spectacle: Elvis Costello With… ."

"It's been an incredible opportunity to talk with friends and people I didn't know before the show and see some incredible performances," Costello said. "It's been remarkable to me that when I go out to the shops in Vancouver, people of all ages come up and talk to me about the show."

Newscaster Brian Williams was named best host in a sport program for his Olympic games coverage; he has covered 13 Olympics.

The other winners were:

-- Best supporting actor: Clé Bennett, The Line

-- Best supporting actress: Catherine Disher, The Border

-- Best reality program: The Cupcake Girls

-- Best miniseries: The Summit

-- Best ensemble performance, comedy: Cathy Jones, Gavin Crawford, Mark Critch, Geri Hall, Shaun Majumder, This Hour has 22 Minutes.

-- Best music or variety program: 2009 MuchMusic Video Awards

-- Best host in a music or variety program: Michael Buble, At the Concert Hall

-- Best actor, miniseries: Jared Keeso, Keep Your Head Up: The Don Cherry Story
