Emilio Frias was left with just a dirt smudge on his nose and scratches on his neck and chest after his ill-fated adventure Sunday, the Denver Post reported.
The boy's two older brothers, Enrique, 3, and Gabriel, 2, took the cover off the first floor cold air return duct from a basement furnace, said their mother, Crystal Frias.
"The fall sounded like a bang. It sounded like something fell on him," said Frias. "I was pretty terrified. The baby was crying pretty loud."
After the fall, 78-year-old Harold "Hal" Temple attempted to save the boy, but became trapped himself, said Bill Brossman, who lives at the residence with Temple.
"Very few people would have dived after the baby," said Brossman. "Hal ... is a hero."
Denver firefighters were called to the scene and rescued the young boy and the elderly man, neither of which was seriously injured.
