Inside VC Golf is reporting that The Golf Channel, a premium cable television channel, will be broadcasting a new reality competition show called "The Big Break" this fall.

The show will bring together 10 golfers who "share the common dream of making a living playing golf." As in "American Idol," "Last Comic Standing," etc., the contestants will all live under the same roof during the competition. Each episode of the show will pit players against each other in a variety of skills challenges. One golfer will be eliminated each week, with the ultimate survivor earning four exemptions to play on the professional Canadian Tour.

The series was shot at the Treetops Golf Resort in northern Michigan. "They lived together and really got to know and like each other," said Jay Kossoff, senior producer for The Golf Channel. "But then they had to go out and compete against one another. It got emotional."

All ten contestants are scratch golfers, with the oldest being 55 years old. They come from a variety of backgrounds, ranging from a bartender to a CEO of a school supplies company. "We tried to find players who have the game and desire to be professional golfers, but may not have the time or the resources needed to try," Kossoff said. "We got thousands of applications, then boiled the list down to a few hundred.

The program will premiere on Tuesday, October 7, 2003.
