Simon Cowell is standing up for his baby's mama, Lauren Silverman, amidst all the negative publicity surrounding her.

"I can't blame the media because it was kind of a juicy story, but there was a lot of stuff said about her, that she trapped me and that she's a gold digger. I mean, absolute nonsense," the 53-year-old The X Factor creator and judge said during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that will air Tuesday.

"She's a great girl. Like I said, it was awkward because of the circumstances."

Silverman, a 36-year-old New York socialite who's expecting Cowell's baby this winter, was still together with ex-husband Andrew Silverman when news of the pregnancy first surfaced in July.

The "adulterous affair" ended the couple's marriage and led Andrew, Cowell's former close friend, to file for divorce on July 15 -- citing adultery and naming Cowell a co-respondent.

"I was like, yeah, 'Oh my God, it's exciting -- and this is going to be a little bit of a nightmare now for the next few weeks," Cowell told DeGeneres when reflecting back on the moment he learned he was going to become a dad.

"Because everyone knows it's well-documented. It was kind of uncomfortable, you know, the situation. But these things happen and everything is kind of calm now and I'm happy. In fact, I'm actually happier than I've ever been."

Despite all the drama, Lauren is healthy, happy and "in a really, really good place," according to Cowell.

Cowell said he plans to raise their child in New York, Los Angeles and London, and the baby will certainly be well-traveled.

The former American Idol judge, however, still refuses to disclose whether he and Lauren -- who also has a seven-year-old son with Andrew -- are expecting a boy or girl.

"You'll have to wait and see. There are a lot of boys in my family so the odds are [it will be a boy]... But I will tell you later," Cowell explained.

The New York Daily News reported last month Cowell felt blindsided and "tricked" by the pregnancy, as he only found out about the baby on July 10.

Lauren and Andrew have since reached a divorce settlement out of court.
