Molly Malaney was apparently surprised by Jason Mesnick's Tuesday marriage proposal while The Bachelor lovebirds were in New Zealand.

"Molly was very surprised; she hadn't expected it to happen right then even though we all knew it was a matter of time," her father Mike Malaney told The Grand Rapids Press on Wednesday.  "She was real excited."

Before Mesnick popped the question to Molly, Mike said The Bachelor thirteenth-season star called him to receive his blessing.

"Jason called us first," Mike told The Press.  "He sent Molly out to get her nails done, and he wanted to run it by us before he asked her. We've already determined that he's a good guy."

Mesnick and Malaney have been dating since he dumped his originally selected bachelorette Melissa Rycroft on-air in favor of Malaney during a January taping of the season's After the Final Rose special.

While the two initially had a long-distance relationship since he lives in Seattle and she was in Milwaukee, Mike said his daughter moved to Seattle "about a month ago" so the two could be together full-time.

Mesnick then proposed on Tuesday while the two were in New Zealand as part of a promotional tour sponsored by Tourism NZ, and Mike said he could not be happier for his daughter and soon-to-be son-in-law.

"They are two smart, intelligent people who obviously did not rush into anything," Mike told The Press.

"Sometimes a long distance relationship is a good way for people to really get to know each other, and they know each other well now. They are ready to take the next step."

In addition, Mike said his conversation with Molly was "short" and he's unaware of any specifics regarding the upcoming wedding.

"They hadn't made any plans yet," he told The Press. "This is all breaking very rapidly."
