Married at First Sight star Matthew Gwynne says his wife Amber Bowles' personality can be overwhelming and stressful and so he just needs his space sometimes.

During Wednesday night's episode of Married at First Sight: Unfiltered, Matt was asked to explain why he unexpectedly stayed out all night one night and didn't respond to Amber's calls and texts or even bother to contact her and let her know he was okay until he returned home the following afternoon.

"Matt, be honest. Did you spend the whole night out because you wanted to get away from Amber?" Unfiltered host Jamie Otis asked Matt.

"Yeah, I think I wanted space and needed space, you know, some time to myself to just relax and hang out with my friends and take some time away," Matt replied.

Jamie asked Matt to clarify whether the Married at First Sight process -- having camera crews around all the time and such -- was overwhelming to him or, more specifically, just his relationship with Amber.

"I think it's a combination of both," Matt admitted. "Her personality can be overwhelming and stressful for me at times."

Although Matt and Amber had a steamy start to their romance and began the extreme experiment on a high note, Matt suggested things changed several weeks into their marriage.

"I think at this time, a lot of the doubts are creeping in," Matt confessed.

When asked what his doubts were at this point in the process, Matt replied, "whether or not we are right to be together, whether or not we're a good match, and whether or not our personalities are right for each other."

Matt acknowledged something was missing in his relationship with Amber.

"[I'm hoping for] more of a deeper connection. I think you can work towards that. That's why I think I want to put in the effort and not just say, 'Okay, I'm done,'" Matt shared.

"I think it can grow, but I've also experienced [a connection] on a much deeper level than I am at this point."

Matt's Married at First Sight co-stars Iris Caldwell and Elizabeth Bice joined him on the Unfiltered broadcast, and Iris was asked to reveal her thoughts on whether Amber forgave Matt too easily for disappearing one night and not calling.

As fans may recall, Amber forgave Matt after a quick conversation in which he said he'd try harder to become a better husband and communicate with her more. Amber even jumped into Matt's lap after their talk, straddling and kissing him.

"At this point, it's only three weeks in. I thought Amber was very forgiving because this is a very forgiving moment," Iris reasoned. "We are still literally learning about the strangers we just met three weeks ago."

"So I think she did a really good job actually having an adult conversation with Matt," Iris added.

Jamie then praised Amber for handling the situation in an incredibly mature manner.

"I don't think anybody else [could do that]," Jamie noted.

"I would not have [handled it that well]," Iris admitted.

Elizabeth then chimed in and acknowledged, "Amber is a teacher and so she has to deal with children all the time, so she can probably handle something like that easily."

Jamie pointed out Elizabeth had made "a low jab" at Matt, which the outspoken and bubbly reality TV star did not deny.

Elizabeth had also directly blasted Matt earlier in the Unfiltered episode, accusing him of treating Amber "like trash."

"I'm not trying to belittle your character. I'm not saying I'm perfect here on this seat right here, and I'm not putting myself on a soapbox. However, how do you treat a human being like that?!" she told him.

"That's so f-cked up beyond. You barely know this girl and you're already making her feel like sh-t."

"I just don't understand how you can be a person on this earth and treat people like that -- like trash, just straight trash!" Elizabeth continued.

Matt, however, told Jamie he felt "hopeful" his marriage could turn around and become stronger.

"I'm hopeful. I'm thinking in my mind, 'Okay, these doubts are normal. I married a stranger a few weeks ago. It's normal,'" Matt shared of his concerns about Amber.

"I'm just trying to, like, focus on the positive things and try to keep moving forward."

In addition to Matt, Amber, Elizabeth, and Iris, Married at First Sight's currently-airing ninth season also stars Elizabeth's husband Jamie Thompson, Iris' husband Keith Manley, and Deonna McNeill and Gregory Okotie.
