Married at First Sight expert Dr. Pepper Schwartz has explained why she, Pastor Calvin Roberson and Dr. Viviana Coles decided to cast Chris Williams as Paige Banks' husband on Season 12 even though Chris had been engaged to another woman only months earlier.

Chris has become a Married at First Sight villain due to offensive and sexist remarks, his high expectations of a woman's physical looks, and his apparent obsession of having sex with a "submissive" woman who's also "a freak" in the bedroom.
During Wednesday night's episode of Married at First Sight: Unfiltered, Pepper and Paige watched back a Season 12 clip in which Chris explained to Paige on their wedding day how he had just covered up a tattoo of his recent ex-fiancee's name on his arm three days prior.
Unfiltered host Jamie Otis -- who starred on Season 1 of Married at First Sight -- asked Pepper, "Why was it that you and the other experts felt that [Chris] was ready [for marriage] even though he had just been engaged previously?"
"I do know that long conversations were had with [Chris] and we would not have proceeded unless we thought he was a catch, and that's what I'm hoping he still is because that is a terrible beginning!" Pepper explained.
Not only was Chris engaged to his ex just three months prior to signing up for the extreme experiment, but he also admitted on his wedding day that he was not physically attracted to Paige.
In addition, Chris asked Paige shocking questions about sex during their wedding dinner, including whether she has "a high sex drive" and uses contraception.
"That's really unusual talk at a wedding," Pepper noted.

Jamie agreed it was such "a strange situation," adding, "I don't want to hear how you've masturbated or not for the last three days. Like, what?!"
"I think he was trying to tell Paige how he had saved himself for her," Pepper explained, "but then it was messed up with all these other questions as well, with too much information."

Pepper and Paige later watched back another Season 12 clip of Chris telling her bridesmaids how Paige is the "opposite" of the pretty-girl type of woman he was used to dating.
"Like trophy wives," Chris said when describing his exes or past flings.
After Paige's friend pointed out how Paige should definitely be considered a trophy wife based on her beauty alone, Chris replied, "I don't think [Paige] is a trophy wife."
Pepper pointed out, "Just let me just say this reflects on [Chris], not you, [Paige]."
"I think you are beautiful," Pepper assured Paige.
"And I don't think Chris understands how insulting he is. Most of us, when we say 'a trophy wife,' what we mean is somebody who is very pretty with nothing else to offer."
"You know? And the fact he thinks that is a good term," Pepper continued, "is shocking to me."

Many Married at First Sight viewers have been bashing Pastor Cal on his Instagram account for matching "ignorant" Chris with the sweet and seemingly sincere Paige, who "deserved better." People have been accusing the experts of matching the couple to boost ratings.
"Thank you for caring for Paige," Pastor Cal wrote to a follower in the comments section of one of his recent posts.
"We do also, and she knows it, since we're in communication with her. Rating are never more important than our couples."
Another Instagram user asked as a result, "So how did Chris get cast?!?"
"We do our absolute best to match couples with integrity," Pastor Cal explained, "but we can't predict how they will act when the cameras roll. We're surprised also."
Pastor Cal therefore suggested the experts had no idea Chris would behave unfavorably in a marriage.
An additional follower complained, "Why couldn't there be better representation of a black man for Paige? I'm truly disappointed at the matchmaking. You have to represent better than this for us Pastor Cal. I feel so bad for her."

Pastor Cal responded, "People surprise us. But there's always a chance for redemption."
Pastor Cal, however, was shown expressing some hesitation and concern about the pairing when the experts were deciding to match the couple on Season 12's Married at First Sight: Matchmaking Special.
"The one thing that scares me though is he is so particular and so darn persnickety about everything, from his hair to his clothing, everything has to be perfect," Pastor Cal told Pepper and Viviana at the time.
"And I don't know if she's going to fit into his perfect image of what a wife looks like."

"I am so confused. I have never been with a man who wants to have sex multiple times that didn't desire me or didn't find me attractive," Paige lamented in a confessional.
Chris told his parents that he had sex with Paige -- once at night and again in the morning -- in attempt to achieve a "closeness" with his new wife as well as some type of attraction or connection.
"But I was wrong. There was nothing there," Chris complained.
Chris later apologized for how he had made Paige feel, and so Paige decided not to check out of her marriage so early on. The pair agreed to a fresh start on their Las Vegas honeymoon.
