Despite some talk that the show might modify its age eligiblity for the upcoming season, American Idol's eighth season will use the same 16 to 28 years old age range that the reality competition has used since its fourth season. (Prior to Idol's fourth season, age 26 had been the maximum age.)

More specifically, all contestants must be between 16 and 28 years old on July 15, 2008 -- meaning that all applicants must be born on or between July 16, 1979 and July 15, 1992 in order to be eligible to participate.

Auditions for the eighth installment of American Idol will begin in San Francisco, CA on Thursday, July 17 at The Cow Palace.

In addition to San Francisco, auditions will also take place in seven other cities -- Louisville, KY; Phoenix, AZ; Salt Lake City, UT; Kansas City, MO; Jacksonville, FL; East Rutherford, NJ; and San Juan, Puerto Rico.  Beyond meeting the competition's age requirements, applicants must also be eligible to work in the United States.
