Flip or Flop star Christina El Moussa is taking the high road when it comes to her divorce from estranged husband and reality TV co-star Tarek El Moussa.

"No matter what, I never want to say something about Tarek that my kids would have to read about later," Christina told People in an interview almost one year after separating from Tarek, although the pair didn't publicly announce their split until December 2016.

The HGTV stars share two children -- daughter Taylor, 6, and son Brayden, 18 months.

"That's their dad," she added of Tarek, "and it's not my focus to put him down."

In a statement the pair released late last year when announcing their decision to call it quits, they cited an "unfortunate misunderstanding" from May 2016 as one of the reasons.

At that time, police were called to the family's home because Tarek allegedly fled the house in a fit of rage with a gun. Police were warned about "a possibly suicidal male," but Tarek insisted he was just blowing off some steam and took a gun with him as a form of protection against rattlesnakes and other dangers.

No charges were filed and both individuals have insisted there was no violence that day.

"It just made me realize that us being separated was healthier for both of us," Christina told the magazine.

After the scare, Christina and her kids moved in with the family nanny for six weeks.

"I didn't necessarily know that we weren't going to get back together," confessed Christina, who later returned to the family home with her children after Tarek had moved out. "It was after seeking therapy and trying to work things out that we both realized this is for the best."

Due to the buildup of years of a strained romance -- which included a thyroid cancer diagnosis for Tarek in 2013 and a miscarriage for Christina in 2014 following a grueling round of in vitro fertilization -- Christina confessed to People that she felt relief once they confirmed their breakup late last year.

Tarek officially filed for divorce on January 9 amid rumors of infidelity and drama on the set of Flip or Flop, but the couple has maintained a desire to continue working together and raise their children amicably in a healthy environment.

"Taylor asked if we could get back together," Christina shared. "We had to explain that sometimes couples get divorced but that she and Brayden are our No. 1 priority. We'll always be a family."
