The Anchorage Daily News reported Brian McNeill was in town to run Humpy's Marathon, went to visit Ship Creek Saturday after reading about the fantastic fishing.
When he got there, he saw fisherman David Kawagley struggling in the water, the Daily News said. McNeill said Kawagley was trying to cross the creek wearing waders, but the water was rushing much too fiercely.
"The water was just running torrentially, unlike normal," said Anchorage police Sgt. Dennis Allen.
Police told the News that Kawagley may have died without McNeill's help.
Kawagley, who was treated by paramedics after the rescue, could not be reached for comment.
