Tax bill nightmare forcing HGTV 'Dream Home' winner to sell house

UPI News Service, 02/10/2006

The winner of HGTV's "Dream Home" says a huge federal tax bill is forcing him to part with the million dollar abode he won less than a year ago.

"We've tried everything we could to come up with the tax money and there's just nothing we could do, it's for sale," Don Cruz told KLTV, Tyler, Texas.

Cruz said HGTV told him the federal tax bill would based on $1.5 million in winnings, and he had lined up about $600,000 in loans to meet the debt.

But when he received his 1099 forms Tuesday, the government wanted taxes based on $2 million.

"With it being this high it would be $800,000 that we'd have to pay the IRS and we can't come up with that kind of money," he told the TV station.
