The Ohio state legislature is considering a bipartisan bill requiring convicted sex offenders to have fluorescent green license plates on their vehicles.

The bill was sponsored by a Republican state senator and a Democrat from the House, and would also require convicted child predators to use the bright plates, a New York Times correspondent reported Wednesday.
Gov. Ted Strickland's spokesman said the Democrat governor would sign it if the legislature passed it, but it does not have unanimous support.
Rep. Bill Seitz, a Republican, said the plates could expose occupants to vigilante justice and punish the offenders' family members who use the vehicles.
Ohio already places special yellow license plates with red lettering on the cars of convicted drunken drivers. A 2005 bid to mandate pink license plates for sex offenders was challenged by Mary Kay Cosmetics and breast cancer research advocates over the color, the report said.
