Stage and film actor Matthew Broderick has signed up to play a famous fictional author in a new NBC comedy pilot, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Broderick starred on Broadway in the musical "The Producers" and counts "Ferris Bueller's Day Off,""Glory" and "The Freshman" among his many film credits.

He reportedly is to play a writer hired by an irresponsible playboy to run his struggling newspaper in New York's Hamptons seashore community in the potential multi-camera comedy series "Beach Lane."

The pilot was ordered Monday, The Hollywood Reporter said.
