Mattel to release 'American Idol' Barbie dolls

UPI News Service, 01/24/2005

Mattel, the No. 1 U.S. toy maker, is set to debut a 2005 "American Idol" Barbie in stores complete with stage, outfits and record contract.

The first playset includes Barbie and her two friends, Simone and Tori, who will audition for a spot on "American Idol," a Fox TV show where teens and young adults vie for a recording contract, CNN/Money magazine reported Monday.

The second playset, expected in stores in July, includes the "Rockin' Recording Studio" with a karaoke machine and a make-believe record contract for the "American Idol" winner.

The dolls are priced at $19.99 each, the show stage $19.99 with the recording studio at $49.99.
