Katharine McPhee cast in pilot for new 'Smash' TV musical series

Katharine McPhee may be returning to TV.

The fifth-season American Idol runner-up has been cast in the pilot for Smash, a new Steven Spielberg-produced musical drama series, The Hollywood Reporter reported Sunday.

Smash, which is being produced for NBC, will reportedly follow a group of characters who join forces to launch a Broadway musical inspired by Marilyn Monroe.

In addition to McPhee, Smash will also feature former Will & Grace star Debra Messing as a lyricist and former FlashForward star Jack Davenport as a choreographer.

McPhee made her acting debut in 2008 in The House Bunny, a comedy film starring Anna Faris.
