'Black Swan,' 'Blue Valentine' up for Gotham Independent Film Awards

UPI News Service, 10/18/2010

"Black Swan," "Blue Valentine," "The Kids Are All Right," "Let Me In" and "Winter's Bone" were nominated for best picture at the Gotham Independent Film Awards.

The casts of "The Kids Are All Right," "Winter's Bone," "Life During Wartime," "Please Give" and "Tiny Furniture" were nominated for best ensemble performance.

The Independent Filmmaker Project announced the nominees Monday.

The Gotham Awards' 20th anniversary ceremony will be held Nov. 29 at Manhattan's Cipriani Wall Street.

In addition to the competitive awards, actors Robert Duvall and Hilary Swank, director Darren Aronofsky and Focus Features Chief Executive Officer James Schamus will each be presented with a career tribute.

"The Gotham Awards celebrate the collective breath of independent cinema," Joana Vicente, executive director of IFP, said in a statement.

"Ranging from the small gems produced on micro-budgets to extraordinary films from specialty distributors, the nominees all share the type of creative vision and risk-taking that are a hallmark of independent film. It's also my pleasure to report that there are more female directors nominated this year than any year before."

In the running for best documentary are "12th & Delaware," "Inside Job," "The Oath," "Public Speaking" and "Sweetgrass."

Competing for the title of breakthrough director are John Wells for "The Company Men," Kevin Asch for "Holy Rollers," Glenn Ficarra and John Requa for "I Love You Phillip Morris," Tanya Hamilton for "Night Catches Us" and Lena Dunham for "Tiny Furniture."

Vying for the breakthrough actor prize are Prince Adu from "Prince of Broadway," Ronald Bronstein from "Daddy Longlegs," Greta Gerwig from "Greenberg," Jennifer Lawrence from "Winter's Bone" and John Ortiz from "Jack Goes Boating."
