The Golden Bachelor star Mel Owens has opened up about Carol Freeman-Branstine's shocking decision to quit the competition right before hometown dates.

During the October 15 episode of The Golden Bachelor's second season, Carol, the 63-year-old aunt and manager of MLB player Freddie Freeman, unexpectedly dumped Mel and quit the show because he never took her on a one-on-one date.

"I didn't see it coming," Mel admitted to Us Weekly in a recent interview.

Carol explained to Mel that she didn't feel ready to introduce him to her family considering they had spent so little time together.

Carol apparently didn't feel pursued or valued by Mel that deep into The Golden Bachelor process.

"Everybody is there for their own reasons, and when they feel they have to leave, they can do that," Mel explained.

"Maybe there wasn't a deep connection, maybe she could see into her future and say, 'I don't want the guy.'"

Mel then revealed that Carol's exit really changed the course of his journey to find love.

"She was really nice and a lovely person, funny, just wonderful," Mel recalled of the bubbly bachelorette.

"So it may have affected the dynamics of the women. And also, maybe, she would have got a rose and somebody else would have left... We'll never know!"

When Carol left the show, she told Mel that they were lacking a deep connection.

"I don't know if I can continue on this journey with you, and this is hard because I really care about you. I do," Carol told Mel.

"I respect that," Mel replied. "You have to be true to yourself, and your feelings come first -- your well-being."

Mel seemed disappointed because he and Carol were finally getting to know each other a little better.

Carol had been excited about the idea of a hometown date, but she just didn't feel close enough to Mel to continue the journey.

Carol cried during her exit because it was a sad moment to walk away from Mel and all of her new friends.

But she said she knew it "just wasn't right" with Mel and he wasn't her "catch" of a lifetime. She felt optimistic, however, about her chances of finding love elsewhere.

Carol also revealed on the "Bachelor Happy Hour" podcast that she gained confidence on The Golden Bachelor, especially when she had to pose in a towel at the beach for the People photo shoot.

The Golden Bachelor's second season is nearing its end after Mel was just shown eliminating Debbie Siebers, a 65-year-old fitness professional from Denver, CO, in third place following his Final 3 bachelorettes' hometown dates.

Carol is expected to make an appearance and talk about her time on the show.

Following The Women Tell All, the show will air Mel's overnight Fantasy Suites dates with his Final 2 bachelorettes: Cindy Angelcyk Cullers, a 60-year-old retired biomedical engineer from Austin, TX, and Peg Munson, a 62-year-old retired firefighter and bomb tech from Las Vegas, NV.
