Jesus Christ, the religious figure millions of people around the globe regard as the son of god, has been portrayed numerous times in television and cinema, perhaps most memorably by Jim Caviezel in 2004's The Passion of the Christ and Max von Sydow in 1965's The Greatest Story Ever Told.

The Carpenter's Son is the latest re-imagining of Jesus' brief, but influential life. Set for theatrical release Friday, the supernatural thriller features A Quiet Place alum Noah Jupe as the young messiah.

"Joseph (Nicolas Cage), Mary (FKA twigs), and their teenage son Jesus have lived under threat for years, clinging to their faith and traditions. But a stopover in a small settlement unleashes growing chaos when a mysterious girl (Isla Johnston) tries to entice young Jesus to abandon his devout father's rules," a synopsis reads.

"With every pull of temptation, the boy is lured into a forbidden world, as his father Joseph realizes to his horror it is the work of a demonic force powerful enough to rival his faith."

Here are 7 more times Hollywood has adapted Jesus' life for the screen:

'The Chosen' 2017-present

Jonathan Roumie plays Jesus as an adult in this TV series from filmmaker Dallas Jenkins.

"We depict scripture that not many other productions have even attempted before and we do it in a way that is very native to how we've been telling the story, which is a message that's kind of gripped people globally," Roumie told UPI in March.

"It's just made all of the characters in this series seem that much more relatable and accessible."

The show co-stars Luke Dimyan, Reza Diako, Shahar Isaac, Paras Patel and Elizabeth Tabish, and is available to stream on Prime Video.

'Mary Magdalene' (2018)

Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix plays Jesus to his future wife Rooney Mara's Mary Magdalene in this film, which was helmed by Garth Davis.

It is an origins story for the title character, one of Jesus' most trusted companions and shows how, even when she was not accepted by the leader's other disciples, she carried out his message of faith, love and peace, regardless of the threat to her own safety.

The cast included Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tcheky Karyo and Tahar Rahim.

'The Young Messiah' (2016)

Adam Greaves-Neal plays Jesus in this film adaptation of Anne Rice's novel, Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt.

The movie focuses on the miracles and healing Jesus was credited with, as well as his emotional and psychological struggles to resist the evil taunts of Satan, played by Rory Keenan.

Christian McKay, Jonathan Bailey and Sean Bean co-star.

'Last Days in the Desert' (2015)

Ewan McGregor plays the dual role of Yeshua, a holy man, and The Demon, in Rodrigo Garcia's independent film about one man's crisis of faith.

The drama also features Tye Sheridan, Ciaran Hinds, Ayelet Zurer.

"The film is very much about the human side of Jesus, because I don't know how you go about shooting the divine side," McGregor told the New York Daily News in 2016.

"I did quite a bit of research on Jesus going in ... reading all these books about who Jesus was and who he wasn't and that wasn't helpful to me," he said. "When I stopped reading and I just started to think about a man who was communicating with his father, and was frustrated with the lack of response, that's when I found him."

'The Passion' (2008)

Game of Thrones actor Joseph Mawle plays Jesus in this TV miniseries that aired on HBO and the BBC.

It focuses on the final week leading up to Jesus' arrest and crucifixion at the hands of politicians who feared his popularity and influence.

Paloma Baeza, Tom Ellis, Penelope Wilton, David Oyelowo and Ben Daniels co-star.

'The Last Temptation of Christ' (1988)

Martin Scorsese directed this adaptation of Nikos Kazantzakis' novel of the same name. Paul Schrader penned the script and Willem Dafoe played the title role.

The film was considered controversial at the time of its release because it showed the human side of Jesus, including imagining himself in sexual situations.

It also was known for its eyebrow-raising cast including Harvey Keitel as Judas, Barbara Hershey as Mary Magdalene and David Bowie as Pontius Pilate.

'Jesus of Nazareth' (1977)

This was Romeo & Juliet auteur Franco Zeffirelli's small-screen take on Jesus' life, based on a blend of all the New Testament Gospels.

Robert Powell plays the lead, while Olivia Hussey, Anne Bancroft, Ernest Borgnine, Laurence Olivier, Christopher Plummer, Anthony Quinn and James Earl Jones round out the cast.

Zeffirelli told Zenit in 2007 that the cast and crew felt like they were doing something important.

"During the scene of the Last Supper, there was a climate of absolute silence and deep spirituality in the room, while outside, a sandstorm raged. The moment was broken by the sobbing of my co-workers," he recalled.

"I want to think there was an energy outside of us, which was invoked in order to make that sublime moment. And in effect, it is one of the most beautiful and spine-tingling moments of the film."
