Viewers witnessed a brutal breakup during Tuesday night's The Bachelor finale in which Peter called off his engagement to Hannah Ann because he didn't feel he could give his fiancee his whole heart.

Not only was Peter wrestling with lingering feelings for Madison Prewett -- who was Peter's first choice but quit The Bachelor before the Final Rose Ceremony when it was filmed in mid-November -- but he allegedly still wasn't over Hannah Brown!

"Peter, we've been through a lot together, and I should've really picked up on the first red flag that you gave to me, was when you wanted to reach out to Hannah Brown to find closure with her," Hannah Ann revealed on the finale when she and Peter were reunited live onstage.

"So really, looking back on it, our engagement involved three women -- me, you still being in love with Madison and proposing to me, and you needing closure with Hannah Brown."

She added, "I was completely blindsided. Word of advice: If you want to be with a woman, you need to become a real man."

Hannah Brown made two appearances on Peter's The Bachelor season.

In addition to stepping out of a limo on Night 1 to return the wings Peter had gifted her when they first met on The Bachelorette 15, Hannah Brown also hosted a group date for Peter, which went totally awry when the Bachelor discovered Hannah Brown backstage crying over their failed relationship.

Peter essentially asked Hannah Brown to join his cast of bachelorettes because they clearly still had intense chemistry, but Hannah Brown seemed to suggest they should just take off together. (She was also competing on Dancing with the Stars at the time).

Following an emotional and very touchy-feely conversation, Peter decided to part ways with Hannah Brown once and for all in order to give his season of ladies a fair chance.

But Peter still canceled the day portion of that group date in the January 13 episode because he confessed he wasn't in the right headspace to date multiple women after his reunion with Hannah Brown.

Peter told Us Weekly in January he "totally understood" his bachelorettes' frustrations with Hannah Brown's return, claiming at the time he was "just as frustrated" Hannah Brown stole the show -- "if not more."

But Peter isn't with Hannah Ann or Hannah Brown right now. Instead, he has reconciled with Madison and is trying to make that relationship work despite his family's disapproval.

On Tuesday night's The Bachelor finale, Peter was convinced he had found "true love" with Hannah Ann, and so he proposed marriage to her.

"I know what I have with Hannah Ann, and that's true love. I've put her through a lot, but the love you find with your person is stronger than anything... and now I see that I've found that person," Peter said in a confessional.

"She gives me so much confidence that that love I've always wanted truly does exist, and right now, it just feels real and right with Hannah Ann."

Hannah Ann accepted the engagement ring, but she was having mixed emotions the morning of the Final Rose Ceremony after Peter confessed his heart was being pulled in two different directions.

Hannah Ann was desperate for validation at the time and tired of giving everything she had to Peter when she was receiving so little in return.

Footage then showed Hannah and Peter getting together over a month after filming wrapped, and Hannah Ann acknowledged things had been "hard" for them up to that point.

Hannah Ann said if Peter couldn't love her the way that she loved him, then that wasn't a relationship she wanted.

Peter explained he had never intended to give his heart away to two people and was battling so much pain.

Hannah Ann therefore flat out asked Peter if he could give her his entire heart, and Peter said that although she deserved that and much more, he couldn't offer her that.

"I can't do that. I'm so sorry," Peter said.

Hannah Ann cried and felt so betrayed. She shamed Peter for taking her first engagement away from her and ruining what was supposed to be a magical time in her life.

"You took that away from me because I trusted you, and that's what you have continued to ask me to do -- 'Be patient with me. Have faith in me. Trust in me,'" Hannah vented.

When Hannah Ann joined Peter live onstage on the finale, she accused Peter of not meaning what he says or not understanding the weight of his words and how they impact people.

"Which one is it? Because you knew how serious I was about an engagement, and you knew me saying 'yes' to you, I was always going to stand by you, even through the worst. And you told me things that kept me with you," Hannah Ann revealed.

"Even after our breakup, you reached out to my parents saying you were just processing your emotions and that you wish more than anything we had met outside of reality TV. How does that make any sense? You had signed up to be the Bachelor."

Hannah Ann said she didn't know the extent of how much Peter had struggled in Australia and she wished he had told her before the Final Rose Ceremony.

Hannah Ann also accused Peter of downplaying his feelings and emotions for Madison, which resulted in her getting blindsided.

Hannah Ann said if Peter had been honest with her about his feelings for Madison and how much he was grieving the loss of that relationship, she would have been convinced he was not ready for a commitment with her.

"You know the outcome would've been different. You know that deep down," Hannah Ann alleged.

"And that's the most hurtful part -- is that you didn't respect me enough just to sit me down and have that open conversation with me, to tell me exactly where your heart was at prior to me saying 'yes' to something I had no idea I was walking into."

Peter told Hannah Ann she was absolutely right and he wished he had done things differently. Peter could say or do nothing other than apologize.

Prior to starring on The Bachelor, Peter finished Hannah Brown's season of The Bachelorette in third place last year.

Peter claimed he had fallen madly in love with Hannah Brown at the time, but she rejected him after Fantasy Suite dates in favor of runner-up Tyler Cameron and eventual winner Jed Wyatt.

Hannah Brown is single today after calling off her engagement to Jed five weeks after the proposal because he had lied about having a girlfriend back home in Nashville, TN, while filming the show.
