Married at First Sight star Paige Banks has revealed the real reason why she ignored Chris Williams' phone calls off-camera when the pair was still trying to work things out.

During Wednesday night's episode of Married at First Sight: Unfiltered, Paige watched back a Season 12 clip of Chris telling her that he couldn't focus on building their connection because she allegedly wouldn't answer her phone when he called.

"And the reason why is because every time we get here and we're trying to have a conversation, you have nothing to say!" Paige laments in the clip.

"I don't have sh-t to say in person because you ain't got sh-t to say off the camera," Chris counters.

"I called you five to seven times and you didn't answer. And that feels like rejection to me. I'm going by actions off the camera. I think that we are at a dead end."

Unfiltered host Jamie Otis -- who starred on Season 1 of Married at First Sight -- admitted she could "barely hold [her] tongue with Chris, to be honest."

Jamie, however, asked Paige for her side of the story when it comes to Chris' accusation she was different on and off-camera.

"Oh my gosh," Paige vented.

"I had to fall back from some of the communication off-camera because I'm like, 'If we can't get on the same page when we're actually filming this or documenting this, then I don't feel comfortable having any more conversations off-camera."

Paige added, "I needed to protect my emotional and mental well-being."

Paige also believed Chris was trying to blame her for their marriage not working.

"He's saying that he feels rejected for me not answering a couple of phone calls, but I mean... I've been feeling rejected since Day 1!" Paige complained.

Paige, however, insisted she wasn't trying to get revenge or give Chris "a taste of his own medicine."

"Because that's not how I operate," Paige noted.

Chris brought up the phone-call conversation after Paige complained their communication had not been consistent and they needed to work on that in order to have any hope of building a friendship or potential romance down the road.

When Chris argued that he had called Paige multiple times to hang out or grab some food but she never answered and seemed to be ignoring him on last week's episode, Paige explained that she had been spending time with her mother.

Paige suggested Chris could have followed up his phone call with a text, but Chris noted he prefers talking on the phone and "it shouldn't be so hard" to communicate with somebody in a marriage.

"I feel like from a communication standpoint, you're not trying," Chris complained. "I don't think we are doing a good job at being spouses."

Paige explained she was frustrated because Chris always seemed ready to shut the door on her, and Chris admitted what he needed emotionally was not being met.

"For you to say I'm not meeting your emotional needs, where were you when I needed you emotionally?" Paige asked, referencing the difficult time when she had discovered during her honeymoon that Chris' ex-fiancee Mercedes Myrick was pregnant.

"Granted, you don't know me from a hole in the wall and you don't owe me anything because we're still strangers, but... we are legally bound to each other. I at least expect that kind of respect, to see this process through."

Paige felt disrespected and vented to the cameras about how she's a busy woman with things to do and errands to run and she shouldn't be expected to drop everything immediately once Chris calls or reaches out.

"There's no connection. I don't have a connection with you," Chris told Paige. "We are 100 percent emotionally disconnected. I am out, gone. Mentally I am gone."

Chris added, "In another time zone, I'm gone. I want to be in a serious relationship, a serious marriage... It's been a week since we had that last conversation, and we are still in the same place."

Chris said if their relationship wasn't real and authentic behind the scenes, then it wasn't going to be after the show.

"I feel like this is not it, and it's fine," Chris admitted.

Paige then burst into tears and cried about how she felt "disturbed" because she had been taking the Married at First Sight process very seriously. Paige said Chris had everything he wanted but threw it all away.

"We didn't make it. I'm sorry," Chris told Paige.

During Wednesday night's Season 12 broadcast, Paige revealed Chris had once again asked her for a divorce and she was trying to work on loving herself and picking up the pieces of her failed marriage.

However, a preview of Decision Day aired on Married at First Sight: The Journey So Far recently and showed Chris telling the experts he and Paige were still "undecided" about whether to stay married or get a divorce.

The conversation clearly indicates Paige and Chris opted to give their relationship another shot at some point after Chris asked for a divorce for the second time.
