At the time filming commenced for Happily Ever After, all three couples were expecting their first child together.

The Married at First Sight broadcast picked up where the last episode had left off, with the couples enjoying a little getaway to Connecticut.

Bobby and Danielle then sat down with Pastor Cal to discuss their relationship.

Danielle admitted their "Perfect 10" marriage was turning people against them because they were the annoying perfect couple, but on the same token, she didn't want to have to lie about her marriage to make others feel better.

Calvin, however, worried some issues were being ignored, avoided or brushed under the carpet in order to steer away from conflict.

Danielle explained she and Bobby are just "calm" people and they are able to talk through any problems they come across, but she could feel her emotional levels rising due to her pregnancy.

Shawniece and Jephte were then shown talking about their "temporary separation" with Dr. Jessica.

Shawniece confessed she and Jephte didn't know how to argue and "fight fair." Jessica therefore wondered if deep issues still existed, and Jephte noted there was a period of time when he simply wasn't happy.

Shawniece said Jephte was "doing him" during their separation, as she returned to "find condoms" in the house.

"It was bad. It was all bad. It was all bad," Shawniece said. "I just lost it."

"That's when she took [my] ring and everything. I knew she was hurt, but I was so messed up and hurt that I was like, 'I want to get my regular life back on track.' So I was going out and doing my thing," Jephte explained.

Jephte and Shawniece agreed, however, they were definitely separated at this time, and so Jephte didn't seem to think he did anything wrong.

"She told me she was filing and 'we're done,' so I was like, 'Let me try to get back to how I was before. My life before,'" Jephte reasoned.

Shawniece said although she told Jephte that she wanted a divorce and was going to file for one, she still felt connected to him, especially because she was pregnant at the time.

Jessica said Shawniece's "strong emotional reaction" was valid, but Jephte pointed out he was never trying to hurt his wife. The situation was brand new to him.

"I definitely would have done things differently [looking back]. I just want to make sure it never happens again because when I see Shawniece, I see the person I want to spend the rest of my life with," Jephte said.

The couple was open, vulnerable and transparent, and Jessica was proud of Jephte for willing to work this hard for his marriage. Jessica said Jephte was absolutely committed to his marriage.

Ashley and Anthony then sat down with Dr. Pepper for a chat about their marriage.

Pepper was hoping Ashley and Anthony could better their communication skills because petty disagreements tended to turn into big arguments.

Ashley admitted she wanted Anthony to take things more seriously, as he often turned things into a joke -- and she didn't appreciate it. Anthony explained he picks and chooses his battles because he doesn't want to internalize everything.

Pepper wanted to make sure Anthony's voice was heard in the marriage as well because Ashley seemed to do most of the talking.

Later on, each couple enjoyed a romantic and relaxing boat ride. At this point, Ashley and Anthony were married for two years and Ashley was four months along in her pregnancy.

Jephte and Shawniece had been married for eight months and Shawniece was eight months pregnant, and Danielle and Bobby had been married for five months, with Danielle being three months pregnant.

But then it started raining and all three couples were forced to sit inside the boat. Ashley said it was nice to talk to people who understood her because each couple comes from an extremely unique dating situation.

Ashley revealed to the ladies she was upset Anthony didn't want to know their baby's sex because it was a big moment she wanted to share with him. Ashley admitted she wasn't going to wait until Anthony's September 1 deadline to share their big news.

Meanwhile, Jephte disclosed with the guys how Shawniece had taken his ring.

"I messed up. It was my fault, and when you make a mistake, you own up to it," Jephte said, adding that the couple would decide together when he deserves it back.

Bobby, being very "emotionally expressive," said he does most of the talking in his relationship and Danielle doesn't communicate her feelings or emotions often.

"People have always joked about me not having tear ducts because I never cry," Danielle told the cameras.

The next morning, Ashley and Anthony opened a letter instructing them to take two photos as souvenirs -- one entirely creatively directed by Ashley and the other one by Anthony. They were asked to think about the backdrop, composition and pose.

Ashley sat side by side with Anthony on a park bench in a garden, and then when it became Anthony's turn to decide, Ashley tried to take the reins. Anthony realized the activity was designed to give him complete control and allow him to take charge.

"It is a little frustrating when I can't take the lead to get this done," Anthony said.

As for Bobby and Danielle, they played Jenga, with each block asking them to divulge feelings they may not be ready or willing to share, according to Calvin.

When Danielle pulled the word "afraid," she said the only time she felt scared was when she thought her dog Henry got lost. Bobby figured Danielle would make the exercise about their dogs, and he wondered what her priorities were.

Danielle kept pulling blank blocks, so Bobby was a little frustrated Danielle didn't have to speak up.

Bobby chose the word "confused" and it was clear he was craving feedback, reassurance and verbal love. Calvin said when the baby comes, Danielle is going to have even less time to focus on her husband and their marriage, so that could become a problem.

Shawniece and Jephte were then shown writing a list of things they loved about each other.

Shawniece chose words such as honest, protective, smart and funny, and Jephte revealed he loved his wife because she's caring, selfless, understanding, strong. hardworking, family oriented and more.

At the end of the couples' retreat, the three couples gathered together. Danielle said Bobby had seen her cry a few times in their relationship, but he hoped she could open up a little bit more.

Similar to Danielle, Jephte was attempting to be as transparent as Shawniece was able to be. Jephte, who became a bit more sensitive, was working on showing his love. Shawniece commended Jephte and was proud of him for his progress.

Anthony was also working on sharing his pet peeves with Ashley rather than holding everything in and letting things explode later on.

Following the little counseling session, each couple was asked to take advantage of their last day in Connecticut.

Bobby told Danielle he had "no doubt" they were expecting a boy and he wanted a boy, but Danielle had a feeling she was pregnant with a girl.

Danielle said she had gotten better at expressing herself to Bobby but it was remembering to communicate her feelings that she struggled with.

Shawniece then spoke to Jephte about how she didn't want to feel like she could handle everything on her own. Shawniece didn't want to be alone, and Jephte completely understood.

Anthony and Ashley then engaged in conversation over a romantic dinner. Anthony said the pair bonded over their love of food from the start.

Anthony suggested Ashley should give him a kiss when she leaves the house in the morning and comes home rather than a brief "hi" or "bye."

The broadcast wrapped with a triple date, and each couple seemed more connected and at ease. Bobby said he learned a lot from this retreat and planned to apply such tools in their normal everyday lives.

"The only way it's going to work is you've got to put in work," Anthony noted.

"We've all signed up to be married at first sight and we all went from being single to being married to a stranger to building a family after final decisions, and boom we're all expected. It's great because we've all said we wanted the same thing, and to now be experiencing that, it's beautiful," Shawniece said.
