Mackey plays the title character of the film about a woman who becomes governor after her predecessor (Albert Brooks) resigns, all while dealing with complicated family relationships. Curtis is her Aunt Helen, seen as a source of support in the trailer's clips.

"Some people get born into stable, loving families," the narrator of the film, played by Julie Kavner, says at the opening of the trailer. "Then there's the rest of us."

In one scene, Mackey is getting advice from Albert Brooks outside a restaurant. Curtis comes out of the restaurant and interrupts the conversation.

"Hey!" she yells at the former governor. "Help her, or go to hell!"

"Nice input," Brooks replies.

The film also stars Woody Harrelson as Ella's father, Rebecca Hall as her mother, and Jack Lowden, Kumail Nanjiani, Ayo Edebiri, Spike Fern, Julie Kavner, Becky Ann Baker and Joey Brooks. James L. Brooks directs.

Ella McCay comes to theaters Dec. 12.
