The musicians union is suing the popular U.S. television series "American Idol" over royalties for ring tones and downloads, according to court documents.

Paperwork obtained by TMZ.com said the American Federation of Musicians filed the suit on behalf of the house band that provides the music for the talent competition.

The union contends the band should get a cut of the revenues the producers receive from audio files sold over the Internet. They alleged the producers did not get permission from the musicians to make the sales, which violates their contract.

The suit seeks $500,000 in damages and a contribution to the pension fund.

There was no immediate response from American Idol Productions.
