Each Rookies episode was filmed on location in Jefferson Parish, LA or Tampa, FL and follows new police officers as they go out on patrol for the first time and are taught by veteran officers who provide on-the-job-training in the field.

Tampa-based Rookies episodes will feature Amy Hess participating in her first SWAT hit during her first week on the job; former bar manager AJ Cafaro delivering his first search warrant and witnessing his first dead body; and April Levine collecting human bones in a plastic bag and lifting a five-day-old corpse.

Jefferson Parish-based episodes include Iraq War vet Henry Conravey and his training officer Todd Rivere responding to a "shots fired" call and other rookies trying to calm the rise in crime since Hurricane Katrina.

A&E began developing Rookies in early 2007.  It is being produced for A&E Network by Tiger Aspect and The Greif Company.
