Survivor keys first CBS Thursday ratings sweeps win in 10 years

By Wade Paulsen, 02/18/2003

Evan and Zora may have made a tasty appetizer, but Survivor is still the main course in the world of reality TV. As previously reported here, the 90-minute premiere of Survivor: The Amazon, the sixth in the series, led CBS to its first victory on a Thursday night during February sweeps in 10 years -- and the last victory was achieved using specials instead of regularly-scheduled series.

Variety reports that, although Friends outdrew Survivor during its time slot, Friends had its lowest rating of the year for a first-run episode. As Variety put it, these ratings "suggest" that Survivor "remains a potent force," since these numbers are comparable to the debuts of both Survivor: Marquesas and Survivor: Thailand.

After this, nobody at CBS will be voting Survivor executive producer Mark Burnett off the island anytime soon.
